I think I might have survived another round of layoffs at work. And you know, this is really p*ssing me off! I keep thinking that, at my age, by now I should have achieved a stable workplace, where I can work until I retire (Yeah, right, like that's ever gonna happen, lol!)
But then I think about the fact that I am working for a Tier One supplier to the auto industry and how the American auto industry as a whole is collectively going through the floor. Then, I think about my brother, Carl, who's worked at GM for like 20 years, and is always under the threat of losing his job; my friend Bob who's got 19 years in at Detroit Edison, where they are going through "restructuring" and I won't even mention my brother Joe, and I think...
This is what it must have been like in the late '80s and 90's in Pittsburgh, when the US steel industry died... Michigan, and Detroit especially, sucks!!!
Worse yet, I keep hearing how the US ecomony as a whole is improving! Everywhere but Michigan... In the 1920's, 30's and 40's, people down South moved here to make good wages in the auto industry. Maybe it's time the trend reverses and we all move down South...
Just a thought...
I know very few people who have worked for one employeer for as much as ten years. I know of no one, save baby-boomers, who have been at one place for more than a decade.
ReplyDeleteThink I will respond in full off the blog. For now, simply calling you lucky will suffice.
