When I first moved in here, there was a circular spot in the back yard (maybe 25 or 30 feet across) and about 1 foot below grade that had very little grass and seemed to be composed of just sand. After pondering this, I realized it was where the previous owners had an above-ground pool. I aded compost and grass seed and called it good.
Anyway, since I first saw a co-worker's (Lori Purtill) pond (beautiful, natural looking pond, looked like it was there before the house) maybe 10 years ago, then my brother Carl's pond (its been through two or three variations so far), I have had "pond envy."
Which is why I came up with the reflection pool next to the patio (hey I was renting at the time and didn't want to cause a big problem). But yesterday's 1 1/2 of rain on top of the frozen ground, created a mini-lake in the back yard (I am posting pictures). It makes me think that using the old pool diameter, plus a teardrop shaped add-on, pointed to the house, would result in a nice water feature in my backyard.
Now to find a cheap backhoe this Spring...
Shovels will work as well (depending on what type of soil you have). I lucked out with sand where I put my pond, and Colin an Khal and I dug it by hand! (all 25x17 feet)
ReplyDeleteIf you need help let me know (but not digging)
I’ll help. Just give me a bit of notice so I can mark it on my calendar. Feel free to invent some sort of excuse for me to use the Sawzall while I’m there, too. Backhoes? Power tools? Oooh, where’s a grunting Tim Allen smiley when you need one? :)
