Got up at 6:47 AM and warmed up a cup of coffee (no breakfast, though). Didn't bother with the traditional "shave and shower" but threw on some grubby clothes and went out to start watering the lawn. Put the sprinkler in the first spot, turned the water on and set the stove timer for 30 minutes. I will repeat this 8 times to water the front lawns and the back lawn by the patio.
So, while I was waiting, I installed the baseboard and shoe molding in the hall (except for were the wall curves). The one corner was tricky. But I remembered something my old mentor at the cabinet shop used to use, and it worked! I also used Jake's advice and instead of trying to bend the baseboard in the curved area, I took a 1 x 4 and curved the back by sanding it, then rounded the top edge to mimic the other base boards. Then I stained it and the one new door molding.
I picked up some paraffin (the kind your mother used to put on top of jelly jars) and used it to wax the wooden drawer guides (an old-timey remedy).
Next, I used the "Goof Off" and the painters knife to get all the tiny (and not so tiny) drops of paint off the hallway floor. I had to keep rinsing the Goof Off off with water, so the floor looked pretty bad. However, I suspected it might, so I had picked up some Mop and Glow and I put that down once the floor dried. Both my knees are now killing me, so now I climbed into the shower after shaving and let the warm water beat on my legs awhile.
I need to stain all he wood I got yesterday, so I ran over to Home Depot for another can of stain, some more fertilizer and two caladiums for the garden on Jake's patio. Of the nine coleus I planted there in the spring, I think maybe four are still alive.
I arrived back home and began to clean the sink and stove top. Skipping my normal weekly house cleaning for a month left them (and so many other things) a mess!
Next I fertilized and watered all the container gardens It was 2:50 PM when I stopped and heated up three burgers for lunch, then took a nap. When I got up from the nap, I started staining the new molding I bought on Saturday. Messy, messy job, but this time I did it outside on the grass.
I finished that at 6:45 PM. Cleaned everything up, and then went out in the back to fertilize the rear garden. I am trying the Miracle Grow Liquifeed system. To do all the gardens (did the front yesterday with it) it took 3 and 1/2 bottles of the liquid and you're supposed to do this every 7 -14 days. We'll see how well it works.
Went inside about 8:00 PM, warmed up two hot dogs and watched TV until 10:00 PM, then I went to sleep.
What was the old mentor's trick?
ReplyDeleteHe would take another piece of molding and trace the outline of the side onto the first piece. Then he'd use a coping saw (I used my bandsaw) and undercut it slightly. When you put the two together, you'd swear both pieces were cut at a perfect angle
