Yes, Anon aka JWG, you are correct! A metaphore is figurative language like, "rolling in dough" and a simile is comparing two dissimilar things, often introduced by "like" or "as."
So, Always Curious, in answer to your question, while many weapons can also be quite beautiful (like, say a German Luger) the Uzi is, sadly, not. It is butt ugly! But, it is one of the the most reliable weapons, rarely jamming, works under extreme conditons, etc. So, the simile works perfectly!
Interesting. Very interesting. I thought you liked this line, because the author managed to mention weapons and whores in the same sentence. Thank you, for the explanation.
What makes this particular line seem “good” to you?
ReplyDeleteThe metaphore, of course. If it is one thing to know about the captain's sensibilities, it is his appetite for metaphores and affection for puns.
ReplyDelete@ JWG:
ReplyDeleteWell, it's actually a simile instead of a methaphore, but yes, you are correct.
I would have swore it was a meth-a-phore.
ReplyDeleteNah, I don't use that stuff... It makes you crazy!
ReplyDeleteI may be wrong, but it depends upon where one looks. The difference is that similes use 'like' or 'as', right? Thus:
ReplyDeleteMetaphore: An uzi is "that universal soldier of the drug wars".
Simile: An uzi is "ugly and reliable as an old whore".
The very last anon is I. -- jwg.

ReplyDeleteLMAO!! Well, that was just the icing on the cake!
ReplyDelete(metaphore, BTW)
