but I have problems this morning!
Saturday, I woke up at 5:30, decided that was ridiculous, went back to sleep and got up at 7:00 AM. I forgot to buy coffee yesterday, so I'm a bit grumpy!
I had a big slice of the sourdough bread, cut in half and toasted for breakfast. With water... Bread and water... Yeah, I'm living high on the hog! Then, I cleaned out the fridge, checking expiration dates and pitching anything suspicious. Amazing what you find when you do this!
Then I shaved, showered and got dressed. I went and did some banking, and then swung by Westborn market. Got a few badly needed staples and, oddly enough, 1/2 pound of liverwurst. I have been having a jones about liverwurst recently for some reason. Probably because I have that loaf of rye bread. I usually eat liverwurst on rye bread with stone ground mustard, but every now and then, I eat it like my Father did, just buttering the rye bread and spreading out the liverwurst. You can almost feel your arteries hardening, lol!
BTW, at Westborn, I bought some beautiful carrots from California, with the tops still on. While they do look great, they also look like a prop from a Bugs Bunny cartoon!
I stopped at CVS and picked up a birthday card for my sister-in-law, Jean. I was cutting through the quarter car wash to get home when, on a whim, (damn, with the liverwurst and now the car wash, today seems all about whims!) I pulled in and washed the salt off my car. Silly, as it's sprinkling right now, but since I park in the garage, the rain won't get the salt off my car today.
When I got home, I dried the car off and then washed that towel along with this week's work clothes. I filled up the car's windshield washer reservoir and checked the oil (its fine) while I was at it. Since I had my big boy clothes on, I went out and refilled the bird feeder (I'm out of peanuts for the squirrels). I came back in and changed into my normal workout clothes (shorts and a tee shirt) and my new slipper socks.
I put the beans and ham hocks back on the stove on low. I need to warm them up so I can work with them.
For lunch, I had two liverwurst sandwiches, one my way and one my Dad's way. I have to tell you the sandwich with the butter and liverwurst tasted better! Next on my list? A nap!!! I set the alarm for 2:30 PM and went to sleep.
I got up when the alarm went off and got to work, refreshed. I cut the meat off the ham hock and put the bones outside for the 'possum. Then I made Jyl's Olive-Cheese bread (Jake and Carla are coming over). Now, I know she modified it and went with "high-end" olives, homemade mayonnaise, etc., but I just followed the original recipe. I also didn't bake my own bread, but used a loaf of store-bought French bread, cut in half.
So, when they came over, I had an appetizer all ready! We talked a while, and then we started playing Clue. Now, I probably haven't told you this before, but, I HATE than damn game! Why? Because I've never understood what you are supposed to do with that little paper you are given at the start. I know enough to mark the things I have on it, and check off the things people show me. But, how do you translate that into knowing what the murderer, place and weapon are? I dunno! I never win and that's why I hate it!
Anyway, Jake won after what seemed like a long time. I never offered my ham and beans, sitting on the stove (we kinda filled up on the olive-cheese bread) and, I planned on making cornbread (Southern-style, not sweetened) with it. But, they left around 8:00 PM, and I put the ham and beans back in the fridge, went and got ready for bed.
I was reading my book and then fell asleep. I woke up in the night to a curious thing, but since it was after midnight, you'll have to wait for Sunday's post to hear the rest...
Oh, I'm on the edge of my seat!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI have learned over the years to ALWAYS keep emergency coffee on hand. Hasn't made me any less grumpy, but at least I am awake.

ReplyDeleteI've never tried the original recipe. How was it?
It wasn't as good as yours, of course, but it was still tasty! We ate one half and I've got the other half in the fridge for snacking. Thanks again!
