So, when I awoke at 5:30 AM, I checked the thermometer. It still showed 41 degrees F. But, by 5:45, the temperature had dropped to 37 degrees. So, fearing the worst, I threw on some long pants and went out to turn the sprinkler on. While that watered the raised bed garden, I decided, since I already had clothes on, to take the four bags of garbage (mostly planting trays and trays) out to the road.
Man, its cold out there! I can see my breath with every exhale. Anyway, I got back inside and shaved, then jumped into the shower. I went back outside and turned off the sprinkler. I can only pray that, if there was a frost, I forestalled it, here.
Once at work, I checked in with my peeps. Jake and Carla reported no frost (although they had their sprinkler set to go off at 6:00 AM). Clinton Township weighted in with B___, who said they had a heavy frost (measured by his car windows) but he had covered all his plants the night before. So, as predicted, it would appear that Wayne County escaped the front's problem.
When I got home, the first thing I saw was the four garbage bags I had braved the cold this morning to set out. Damn! I left them out as they have come later than this and still picked them up.
After checking the mail, giving the cats a treat, refilling the bird feeder, etc., I hooked up the rear hose. I gave the entire back garden a good watering, especially the two new hostas, the two new roses, the hills of squash & cuke seeds and the newly planted morning glory seeds.
After unhooking the hose setup, I was surprised to see it was almost 8:00 PM when I got back inside! I warmed up some of the grilled smoked sausage and two ears of corn for dinner. I watched TV until 10:30, but before going to bed I checked out the front window and the garbage bags were still there. I hope they don't get torn apart by bobcats or wild dingoes. I HATE picking up week-old garbage and rebagging it!
