I owe, I owe, so back to work I go...

Woke up to the "get up and go to work" alarm for the first time in 14 days. I can't say that I missed it!

I tippy-toed around so as not to disturb my guests (although I am sure I did) and then left around 7:00 AM. I didn't realize how hoarse my voice was from this cold, but everyone at work asked what was wrong with me. After I explained, everyone then avoided me, lol! At lunchtime, I ran over to Lowe's and got some almond latex caulk and a stick-on hook for the shower.

After lunch, I thought I would call home to apologize to Lu and Sadie for the less-than-optimum conditions I put them through this visit and to wish them a safe journey home. But, I realized they probably wouldn't answer the phone. So, I called Lu's cell phone.

I found that they had already left. In fact, they'd already been to my Mom's and were heading up to Jeremy's house. They pooh-poohed my apology, thanking me for the visit and again invited me to come and visit this year. They also said that my Mom had thanked me for the soup (I sent a quart of the Garden Vegetable and another quart of the Potato-Leek soup with them to give to her, BTW).

Mark, the Manager of the three-building complex where I work, stopped in my office to let me know he had brought in some ground venison and a venison steak last week for me (we've exchanged deer hunting stories for years). He told me he left it in the cafeteria freezer. Thanks, Mark!

When I got home, I found the ladies had totally cleaned up the place before leaving (Thanks!) and that the Computer Elves had snuck in and replaced the loaner laptop with my trusty old CPU. There was a receipt for $39 and my change on the kitchen table. Thanks!!! The Captain is now officially back in business!

If only the Drain Fairies had stopped by...

Speaking of which, I noticed that when I shaved and took my shower this morning, the drains did not overflow. Did yesterday's snaking really work? Only one way to find out! So, I gathered up all the wash and started a load (turning off the second rinse, just in case).

The floor drains still remained dry when the soapy water drained but did not survive the first rinse. Dammit! So, I let the water retreat and will do the second rinse Saturday morning and then dry them. My bedding and the daybed sheets will have to wait for the drain guys.

I gave my Brother Joe a call and thanked him and Kathy for the Birthday present of herbs. He asked me if I remembered that Grandpa Wilde (my Grandmother's second husband) was blind. I told him I remember that you had to be quiet around him, but that I honestly don't remember he was blind. Hmmm... I dunno...

I cooked the rest of the pasta and ate it and the last of the Eggplant Parmesan for dinner.

I started trying to catch up with my taped TV shows. The Food Network had put on an all-day marathon of Iron Chef America shows. I managed to get through three of them (not three full hours, of course, as I fast-forwarded through the commercials). I went to bed around 10:30 PM.

  1. I remember going over there to the house where they lived in Detroit. Remember going there to move everything out? That crazy stairway from the basement up to the attic?

  2. Yes! I do remember! What I always thought was weird was the bedrooms. They were like 6 feet wide and only big enough for a bed. No room for anything else.

Now, I admit, when I was growing up, my bedroom was NOT what kids have today. It had a set of bunk beds and a single twin-sized bed, a dresser and a little closet (maybe 4 foot x 2 feet). I shared it with my brothers Joe and Carl. We did NOT play in it, or have any "fun" in it. We just slept in it.

But Mama Rene's bedrooms were even more austere!
