Quote of the Day

When I got my stash of stuff from Mom's (sorted out by Joe and Kathy - thanks, again!) one of the items was a notepad from GM that said on every page: "A note from John C. Goerlich." So, it had to be from the late 1980's or early 1990's when I worked there onsite. That was back in the day when you got perks for working for the Big Three, I guess.

I don't remember giving it to her, but, anyway, when I went to use it, two things (both in her handwriting) fell out of it.

One was a book recommendation from a Dorothy Farmer for "On Wings of Eagles" by Lalle (?)

The other was a quote:

"I have a flexible mind! I believe its one of the advantages of growing old, I find youth quite rigid at times!"

~ Emily Polliqax (from the "Amazing Mrs. Polliqux" - whatever the hell that was...)

I can get behind that!

  1. Youth may be rigid, I agree, but we do have an eye for details. Put differently, you spelled the name wrong. :-)

Mrs. Pollifax is a character (and a book series) by Dorothy Gilman. It was one of Grandma's favorites. "The Amazing Mrs. Pollifax" was the second or third book.

Emily Pollifax is a widow in her later life. She is, if you can picture this, a cross between Grandma Goerlich and James Bond. The Pollifax series sees Emily traveling to a variety of locales, solving mysteries. Grandma loved reading them and had the entire set.

When Grandma switched to listening to audio books, I bought her a couple Pollifax books on cassette tape. In my stash of Grandma stuff, I have the "Mrs. Pollifax and the Second Thief" book. You are welcome to borrow it if you are interested.

  2. Ah, I see. I misinterpreted her handwriting and what I took for a "q" was really an "f".
