My Mother's Diaries

I was reminded this afternoon about my Mother's diaries.

Maybe 15-20 year's ago, my Mother asked me a favor. She said when she died, would I please get all her diaries and, without reading them, burn them.

I, of course, agreed. I knew they existed. I actually read her entry when I told her that I would be marrying Fran (some 44 years ago). There was nothing there that said I was a 16 year old kid who had got a girl pregnant. She kinda wrote in code. The entry said, "John told us of his future plans."

But, after she died and I learned that my brother Joe and his wife Kathy were cleaning out the house, I told them any diaries they found should be kept for me to dispose of.

Oddly enough, no one found any diaries. All I can figure is that she didn't trust me enough and burned them herself.

That makes me kinda sad...

  1. Did you tell people of your plan to burn the diaries before they "disappeared"?

  2. No, I kept that to myself (and maybe a trusted friend or two)
