TGIF and a Big Thanks to Amy!

I drove to work just after it had rained on Friday and it was sprinkling when I went home for lunch. When I went out after work, it smelled like snow...

My leg hurt, so I lay on the bed and watched the last two episodes of World War II in HD that I'd taped from the PBS station. Whew! At least now I know how it ended!

My daughter Amy had sent me an email that contained helpful hints. One of them caught my eye, as I personally know two people who have had house fires related to their dryer. It read as follows:

"INFO ABOUT CLOTHES DRYERS

The heating unit went out on my dryer! The gentleman that fixes things around the house for us told us that he wanted to show us something and he went over to the dryer and pulled out the lint filter. It was clean. (I always clean the lint from the filter after every load [of] clothes.)

He told us that he wanted to show us something; he took the filter over to the sink and ran hot water over it. The lint filter is made of a mesh material... I'm sure you know what your dryer's lint filter looks like. The hot water just sat on top of the mesh! It didn't go through it at all!

He told us that dryer sheets cause a film over that mesh [and] that's what burns out the heating unit. You can't SEE the film, but it's there. It's what is in the dryer sheets to make your clothes soft and static free... that nice fragrance too. You know how they can feel waxy when you take them out of the box... well this stuff builds up on your clothes and on your lint screen...

This is also what causes dryer units to potentially burn your house down with it! He said the best way to keep your dryer working for a very long time (and to keep your electric bill lower) is to take that filter out and wash it with hot soapy water and an old toothbrush (or other brush) at least every six months. He said that makes the life of the dryer at least twice as long! Learn something new everyday! I certainly didn't know dryer sheets would do that."

As I said, that caught my eye, because I fear dryer fires. I even bought a vacuum attachment kit that's supposed to clean out the lint from the duct work years ago. So, as an experiment, I took out the lint filter screen, brushed it clean (like I always do) and ran it under the faucet. I'll be dammed! The water only went through the outer edges and just sat there in the middle!!

I got a scrub brush and some Top Job and washed the heck out of it. When I rinsed it, the water went easily through everywhere. I shook off the water, put it back in the dryer and ran it for a short while to dry it out.

Thanks, Amy!

I had put an old folded towel on the right side of the computer table to try and lure Caley there (so she isn't walking on the keyboard or plopping down between the keyboard and the monitor.) Well, she sorta liked that, but still was annoying. So, since I noticed she liked being on top of the printer, I switched it there. I may have been successful... See Photos.

I took a brief call from a friend and then my other daughter Melissa called. As usual we talked for a long, long time. The one thing that I hope she took with her after our conversation is the correct usage of the ellipsis (which is three, equally spaced periods). As a writer, it really p*sses me off to see like five periods. That's just stupid! It's three, people! Three!!!

When we finally hung up, I was starving! So, I heated up the rest of the Sloppy Joe mixture and ate two of them watching some more TV. I went to bed about 10:00 PM.

  1. Dad when I got that email I didnt believe it so I also took the lint filter out and ran under water I was shocked! Scrubbed mine with old toothbrush and water ran thru fine. Guess you do learn something new everyday.
    Have great weekend!

  2. Hey, thanks for the tip. You may have saved my house from burning down. I only hope other readers will check their lint filters.
