I woke up at 7:00 AM on Saturday, after a rather restless night. Since the cats were still absent, I stripped the bed and started the wash. When it was just the sheets, pillow cases and the bedspread, that was always one load. Add in the blanket and now its two.
I ground up some coffee beans and made a pot of coffee. I posted the Blog, answered a couple of emails and then went and lay on the couch (Saturday Morning, Over Easy, remember?) Nice...
It ended all too soon. It always used to end at 11:45 AM, but for some reason, now it ends at 9:45 AM. WTF? But, I continued to lay there (the fireplace was memorizing) and eventually fell asleep. A phone call from a friend woke me up and I was back in gear.
I switched the sheets into the dryer and then started the blanket load. When the dryer stopped, I made half of the bed (waiting on the blanket). Then I started on tonight's dinner.
I decided to kick it up a notch and put a tablespoon of bacon fat in the Dutch oven. To that, I added a large yellow onion, diced fine. While that cooked, I cut up about two pounds of the remaining Yukon Gold potatoes, diced in large chunks. I put those in the pot and stirred it all up with my wood spoon.
Then I cut open and added a bag of sauerkraut (I hate the canned stuff - it tastes "tinny"). Next I took a pound of smoked sausage and cut it on the biase. That went into the pot and I turned it on to simmer (low and slow, baby!)
Around 4:00 PM, my daughter Melissa called and we talked for a short while (only about an hour or so). I finished making the bed. Then I checked on dinner and it was ready. So, I plated it and wandered in to watch some TV. I watched a few taped cooking shows but then switched to AMC and my all-time favorite movie: Jeremiah Johnson. I wanted to BE Jeremiah Johnson!
When that finally ended, the next movie was an old John Wayne/Dean Martin classic, Rio Bravo. I watched that, too and, as a result, didn't get to bed until after midnight.
