When I woke up on Friday morning and was at the kitchen sink, I glanced out the window and saw the squirrels had chewed through the rope on the bird feeder and it was smashed on the ground again. Since this is like the fifth or sixth time this has happened, I was pissed!
So, at lunch time, I went to Home Depot and bought one of the metal ones my brother Carl talked about. I also picked up some new furnace filters (I have to switch out the old ones on April 1).
Since I was over that way anyway, I stopped in at Westborn and got some deli ham, Swiss cheese and a baguette for the weekend.
When I got home from work, I treated the cats, sorted through the mail and then fixed myself a drink and sat on the couch for a while to unwind.
Just before 7:00 PM, I preheated the oven to 350 degrees F. and got out the strata to warm up a bit.
Now, as you know, I'm no strata expert, but it didn't look like I'd expected. The eggs only came halfway up the pan and the rest were dry bread cubes. I stirred it around to try and mix it up, but I have my doubts!
If you remember, I tried to adjust the original recipe to allow for a smaller baking dish. My bad! Anyway, I put it in the oven and set the timer for an hour.
When the timer went off, I took it out. Damn! The bottom half was great, but the top half was just dried out bread. A little ticked (at me), I scraped off the top half and ate about 1/3 of the bottom.
I either used too much bread or too little eggs. The taste was good, though, and I guess I will have to try and perfect this dish.
I watched TV until 10:00 PM. I set the Friday Night Fights to "tape" and went to bed.
I have a recipe for a variation of strata that I've used for years. It's a Christmas morning tradition in our family, is never fail and can be easily cut in half. (even my oldest daughter who is a tad culinary challenged can pull it off!)I'll email you the recipe.
