Memorial Weekend Day 1

The weather on Saturday was gloomy (what else?) so I didn’t go outside. I alternated working in the house with watching movies. AMC had a number of war movies in honor of Memorial Day. I taped “Patton” and watched it in small bites. “Apocalypse Now Redux” was coming on later, so I set the DVD-R to record that, too.

The Patton movie reminded me of B___’s dad. He was in a tank at the Battle of the Bulge. I often begged him for an anecdote, but he didn’t like talking about the war.

He did tell me one story, though. He said they were driving through France and came upon a destroyed farmhouse. But, the chicken coop was still intact. So, they stopped, let the chickens loose and gathered the eggs.

They had been eating cold K-Rations for days and had no way to cook them. So, they poured a little motor oil on the hot hood of the tank and fried the eggs on it. He swore they were the best eggs he ever ate!

You gotta love American GIs!

I talked with B___, with Jake, and with Melissa (though not necessarily in that order).

When I finally got around to feeling hungry, I made tuna and peas, served over a half a bag of wide egg noodles. Yumo!

I stayed up late (watching about half of Apocalypse Now) to the point of my favorite line “I love the smell of napalm in the morning,” then I turned it off and went to bed.
