Easy. Size matters: river, creek, brook. Creeks are bigger than brooks, but smaller than rivers.
The hearty farmers of Michigan, Minnesota, and Pennsylvania call them "cricks". A quick Google shows that this is a regional pronunciation. But I have no idea why.
I always said "creek" growing up. That may be my mother's influence.
I have to say it again: size does not matter! (No, I have had to try and sell that all my life, LOL! My favorite was, "Look at it this way, you'll still be a virgin afterwards...")
Anyway, I digress. Thanks for the info on the crick.
And, thanks for the update on Lu. I was getting tired of calling to find out how the latest natural disaster affected them.
You realize I've lived here nearly 10 years and lost power like twice (once where the whole eastern seaboard grid went out). Why would anybody choose to live in an area with ice storms, hurricanes and earthquakes???

ReplyDeleteI wasn't going to go down that route. But, sure, let's bring up your brook and my river.
Like pronounciation of the word creek, luckily, some things come from my mother's side.
