Happy Birthday... to ME!

I wish I could tell you all the wonderful things I did on my birthday (I really do). But, mostly I sat or slept in the recliner with the heating pad, dowsing myself with pain pills every six hours and taking the occasional birthday phone call.

Jake called me first and we chatted for a while. Then Carla’s mother called to wish me a Happy Birthday and a Merry Christmas. Later on, B___ called in the midst of washing up from the morning’s Christmas cookie baking effort.

I did eventually post the Blog entry and was astonished at all the messages on my Facebook wall. Now, I must confess, I don’t know how to look at my wall, so I just answered them from the emails I was getting. I suppose I really should check into how this all works.

I did have to go out in the afternoon for kitty litter and cat food (the errands I should have done on Friday). I went to Kroger’s, knowing Meijer’s would be jammed with last minute gift shoppers.

Since I was there anyway, I grabbed a very small ham and a can of cut yams, thinking I really should make a Christmas dinner.

I was standing in the checkout line, feeling really bad, when it happened. The ham I’d grabbed didn’t have a price sticker on it! So, she called back and asked the meat department for the price. They went to check while I tried to keep from fainting. After a while, they came back on the phone and asked more questions, which the cashier tried to answer: “No, it weighs 2.3 pounds.” “It’s a Kroger brand.” Then they went away again.

I couldn’t take any more, so I told the cashier to forget all that. I told her I would pay her $10 for the ham, I’d even pay $20 or she could set it aside, but I had to get out of there. She took one look at me and said, “I’ll take the $10.”

I got home and got inside. I treated the cats, took a pain pill and hit the recliner again (it was cold enough outside I wasn’t worried about bringing in the ham).

When I felt better, I checked the phone and saw somebody from Virginia called. I didn’t check the voicemail, just dialed the number. I got their voicemail and left a message that I was returning “somebody’s” call. When I hung up, I was feeling a bit stupid, so I did check and it was from Lu.

She called back a while later to wish me a Happy Birthday. She sounded horrible and said she was very ill, coughing up green gunk, etc. She had been to the doctor’s and tried to reassure me that she wasn’t contagious.

I say “tried” because she is coming up here next week and that’s all I need is to get sick!

Melissa called and we talked for a while about our various Holiday plans. Later on, Sadie also called for my birthday.

I spent the rest of the night alternating between reading the book Melissa had sent me for my birthday and dozing in the chair.

Happy Freakin' Birthday!
