Well, the weatherman didn’t lie. I woke up at 6:30 AM (I didn’t bother to set the alarm) to thunder and heavy rain. But, they say it’s a fast moving shower and will be gone quickly. I made a pot of coffee and posted the Blog entry.
I told them at work I might be taking the morning off, or I might just be in late, depending on when the bed guys show up. But they called at 8:00 AM and said they’d be here in about 45 minutes (I was impressed as it was a nice touch that, say, cable companies could learn from). The rain had already stopped by then, but it was windy and chilly outside.
Sure enough, they showed up on time. I offered to move the car and let them go through the garage, but they said if they could get my box springs out the front door, they could easily bring the new bed in. And, they did.
They were surprised (and not in a good way) at just how much the old mattress weighed (I always was, too). But they got the base in and then started to assemble the new mattress. I didn’t realize it was in pieces. But they got it together quickly. In fact the only hitch was that only the top one of my two bolts on either side of the headboard fit into the new bed’s hardware. They tightened it and said it should be okay, but I wasn’t buying that. They not only took away my old mattress and box springs, but all the cardboard boxes that the new bed came in.
So, after they left, I stopped on the way to work and bought two more 3/8 x 4-inch carriage bolts, washers, lock washer and nuts. I had covered up the bottom ones on the bed with decorative pieces when I made the old bed, you see.
I also bought a long 3/8-inch drill bit as I knew I’d never find the old one I’d used 10 years ago. That was the big ticket item.
I got to work before 10:00 AM, and my boss said not to take a half vacation day, just make it up over the next few days. Great!
I did run out and grab something to eat, but ate it at work as a working lunch.
When I got home after 5:00 PM, I started the Wednesday night wash and then got my drill motor. It didn’t take long to drill two new holes and secure the head of the bed to the new frame. In fact, I think it took longer to clean up all the sawdust, etc. But, now the headboard is secured.
I made up the bed and tried it out. Nice! I did notice that, when I am sitting on it with the back raised, I have to lower the sleep number so it doesn’t press so hard against my spine. When I go to sleep, I’ll have to raise it so it won’t be so soft (I am used to a firm mattress when laying flat). It will take some getting used to, but I am definitely impressed. Thanks for the tip, Melissa!
Oh, by the by, Scruffy doesn’t seem to care, but Caley is afraid when the head or foot of the bed moves and she jumps off.
I talked briefly with Carla, who called about harvesting some of the herbs she’s been growing in a planter on their patio.
I put the pants and shirts in the dryer and heated up two brats for my dinner. I was saving the corn for the rest of the ribs as they seem to go together.
When they were dry, I hung up my work clothes and settled in for a night of relaxation. Sometime later, I had a few green grapes as a healthy late-night snack. I fell asleep around 10:00 PM.
