Hump Day

I was almost ready for work on Wednesday and just putting on my socks when I noticed I had grit or dirt or something on the bottom of my feet. So, before I left, I got out the electric sweeper and went over the main floors in the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, office and hallway. I must have tracked something in Tuesday night.

It was still nice out when I went to work, but they said it would rain later. And, of course, it started just about noon, when I left for lunch. I stopped in at the Newburgh Grill and got a patty melt for fuel. Then I went to Lowe's to check out their hose reels/boxes.

Now that I have moved the bird seed container and the wheelbarrow away from the back of the house, the space looks barren and the hose junky. I had always used that side of the house as a storage area and the only thing I planted there was a bush that had been up front and was dying from some disease. I cut it way back and transplanted it years ago and now its growing nicely.

So, I decided to divide up some of my bigger hostas and day lilies and plant them back there. The only fix for the hoses would be a box to hide them in. I think if I do it right, I could tie in the little garden on Jake’s patio, too. Its always seemed like a little "orphan" garden to me.

I found a box I thought would work and was big enough for the two long hoses I use. So, I bought it, but it wouldn’t fit in the trunk. Since it was still sprinkling (the initial, first storm had passed, I guess), I just stuck it on the front passenger seat. It was lucky that I did as the rain started back up as I was driving out of the parking lot, on my way back to work.

When I left work for home, the sky was weird. It was sunny standing next to the car, but looking north it was almost pitch black!

But, by the time I got home, it was getting dark here too. I decided working outside was out of the question and the rain was not done yet. So, I stuck the new hose reel in the garage.

Once inside, I treated the cats and got my own treat: a glass of buttermilk. I looked out the kitchen window while pouring the buttermilk and, yes, it was pouring again. But, the heavy rain again only lasted about 15 minutes.

Instead of going outside, I started my Wednesday night wash. Then I went and watched the evening news.

I warmed up the last two brats and ate them for dinner. As I feared, the baguette had hardened even more, but was still usable. It did give a whole new meaning to the word “crunchy,” though.

I finished the laundry during Jeopardy, as you probably could tell. I still can’t get over that one fact. I always thought of lawn jockeys as rather inappropriate yard ornaments, not an aid to the freedom of slaves. I guess you just never know.

I watched an old black and white film from 1932, starring Joel McRae and Fay Wray. It was an adaptation of one of my favorite short stories and called by the same name, “The Most Dangerous Game.” My only regret was that it only lasted 75 minutes (but, it was a short story, after all).

I switched to reading after that, and finally went to bed around 10:00 PM, again.
