I wore my light jacket into work on Tuesday, but was already
sweating when I got there. It wasn’t that warm, just warmer than I was used to.
I stopped at Home Depot first. I had noticed when I bought
the “stainable” (bullshit) wood putty that Minwax had stained wood putty. So I
asked Courtney what color she was going to stain this beast. She said she
didn’t know, but she wants it to match the coffee table she inherited from her
grandfather (who made it) So, I asked her to send me a photo.
I put the photo on my phone and checked it out.
Sidebar: One of the things that p*sses me off the most is
that stain makers do not provide strips (like paint strips) you can take home
and compare. They only have a chart in the store.
Anyway, I compared the photo to the chart and the lighter
areas seem to be “cherry,” but the darker ones “gunstock.” That might just be
age, of course. But, I had to get to work and there seems to be a reddish tint
to her coffee table so I selected one. I figured anything had to be better than
the “stainable” wood putty that doesn’t take stain.
It was still wet outside at 10:00 a.m. so I walked inside. I
can’t afford to fall…
I went home for lunch. I immediately applied the wood putty
so that it could dry in time for me to start sanding it this evening. I filled
in all the nail holes (there really aren’t that many) and then checked to see
the dry time.
Damn! It said this does NOT dry to a sand-able condition!! It’s
more like a spreadable version of the color crayon. Of well, it was on there
now. I wiped off the excess with a damp rag.
I ate the rest of the potato salad for lunch (it was getting
wet) and then went back to work.
I walked outside in the afternoon. It felt like spring!
I slowly made my way back home after work. Not only are
there a ton more cars on Plymouth Road, but a LOT more semi tractor-trailers.
Again I had to wait for some nice folks to (finally) let me
turn onto my street. I parked the truck outside, locked it and took the trash
can in the garage.
I treated the cat, changed clothes and then went out to the
garage. I tipped the table over on its side (still on boards, not the garage floor)
and got out the belt sander. I put on a mask (never pretty) and did the rough
sanding of the table. I had to empty the bag once!
I finished up around 6:30 p.m. I’ll do the finish with the orbital
sander another time. I pulled the truck inside and locked up for the night.
I no longer had a side for dinner, so I made some Uncle Ben’s
Wild Rice. Then I warmed up the rest of the steak and had an excellent dinner.
I watched my two NCIS shows and went to bed at 10:00 p.m.

Looking good Dad! You sir are ready for anything...including the Apocalypse.
