I woke up around 5:30 a.m. in my hotel room in Charlotte. Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. Of course, had there been a stirred-up mouse, I would have called the front desk.
I read for a while, then I shaved, showered and dressed. My
yearning for a cup of coffee eventually won out and I went down to the front
lobby and bought a small black Starbucks. I took it back up to the room and
read some more. I thought of sitting out on the terrace (There was a small
terrace outside my room on the third floor, just big enough for two lawn
chairs), but when I slid open the patio door, the air was already warm and
humid. So, I sat on the love seat and read, awaiting Jake’s text.
I finally got it with our departure time. So, we left en
masse and headed for breakfast. This was another restaurant that Carla had
found and wanted to try (she’s great at this).
So we ate at Terrace Café.
Carla had the Malted Belgian waffle with hash browns and bacon.
Jake ordered the Croque Modame (Canadian bacon, Swiss and
mayo between two pieces of sourdough
toast, topped with an over-easy egg) with fresh fruit.
I had got the Breakfast casserole (sausage, egg, onion, and
cheese with a pastry crust, served with hash browns, grits or fruit). I, of
course, ordered mine with grits (I love grits).
We left there and checked out a nearby (huge) mall. Finally,
we stopped at a Whole Foods to get a few last minute items for Jake to make
Carla’s birthday dinner. Then we headed back down I-77 to home.
It was sprinkling when we left, but we drove in and out of
walls of heavy rain (you could see them coming).
But, we made it and arrived safely. We unpacked the car and
then unpacked our suitcase.
We took the rest of the day off. Carla did a load of
laundry, Jake ran some errands and I got a nap in.
We did have a dinner planned but decided, since Carla had
declared it was movie night, to go with a pizza and some chicken wings
(delivered).
We watched “World War Z” with Brad Pitt and “Flight” with
Denzel Washington (well, he was the lead, but I think John Goodman stole the
show with his character). Then we went to bed. It was late (by J&C
standards), almost 10:30 p.m.!
