I woke up at 5:30 a.m. on Sunday. I read in bed until the
morning news came on. I filled in the rest of the Blog and then moved onto the
Sunday morning chores.
I finally shaved, showered and got dressed. Then I headed
out to Home Depot. I got the few things I needed but, once again, they did not
stock the molding I wanted!!! What up with that???
I stopped at the gas station and filled up after chatting
with my new buddy.
Back home, I left the truck outside and took everything
inside. It was cold, with a brisk west wind and the atmosphere felt “heavy”
with snow…
Speaking of snow, it never did last night, at least around
here. But it’s supposed to snow tonight through tomorrow morning.
I took a break to
make my Sunday brunch: biscuits and sausage gravy. So, I browned a tube of
Jimmy Dean pork sausage.
I opened a tube of Pillsbury Grands. Scared the crap out of
me (like always), but this time dough flew about. WTH? I cleaned up the mess
and put the shabby-looking biscuits of a half sheet tray. I had to re-sculpt
most of them, but I don’t know why (were they too old?) And, they never did “rise”
like usual. They just turned into hockey pucks.
But, I digress. When the sausage was done, I added in 1/4-cup
of A/P flour. I cooked that for a couple of minutes (to get the raw flour taste
out) and then slowly added 2 1/2 cups of whole milk. I brought that to a boil
and then simmered it for a few minutes more until it thickened. I added a
little salt and a lot of fresh ground pepper, then put a lid on the pan.
When the biscuits were done, I got them off the sheet try
and onto the counter to cool. I took the two best-looking ones, plated them and
topped them with sausage gravy. Delicious!
The doorbell rang (scared the crap out of me) and it was my
neighbor Tammy with mail. The postman left all my mail in their box and didn’t
pick up the letters she was mailing out. He must have been in a hurry or
something.
I went out in the garage and got started on rough cuts. I
worked until 2:00 p.m. when I finally realized how cold I was. So, I went
inside, got a cup of coffee and took a warm-up break. I went back out in the
garage at 3:00.
I was finished before 5:00 p.m. and had all the wood stacked
in the kitchen.
I blew out the sawdust in the garage and then blew the
remaining leaves onto the lawn.
I pulled the truck in. The next step in my original plan was
to cut the front lawn with the push mower, but it had already started snowing.
And, not the pretty big flakes, but little icy pellets. So, I gave up on that
idea and buttoned up the garage for the night.
Back inside, it was another cup of coffee, reading in the
living room and warming up.
Then I changed into my bathrobe, shook off my sawdusty
clothes and started the last load of weekend wash.
I watched the news and then started dinner.
Now, as you might know, I am not a big fan of tilapia. But,
I had some in the freezer I need to use up (I think I bought it for fish
tacos).
So, I preheated the oven to 400 degrees. I lined a half
sheet tray with aluminum foil and sprayed that with canola oil. I put the
frozen fish filets on the foil. I brushed them with olive oil and then
sprinkled smoked paprika, sea salt and pepper on them. I topped each with a
generous handful of shredded Parmesan cheese and baked them for 17 minutes.
Meanwhile, I heated up a 90-second bag of Uncle Ben’s Wild
Rice mix. While that was cooking in the microwave, I mixed two tablespoons of
mayo with one tablespoon of horseradish for my sauce.
I plated the results and it was
great. Even though I shouldn’t have, I went back for seconds!
I watched the Red Wings game and
came away disappointed.
I switched to reading in bed
until I started nodding off, then went to bed for real.

Interesting. So, I take it this is one of those times where fish and cheese do mix?
ReplyDeleteI dunno, but it tasted pretty good!
