So, Tuesday night on the news, they said a rare combination
would allow us to see the Northern lights here in southern Michigan. The
weatherman said to check outside “just after sunset.” So, I did.
Nothing. I kept checking until about 9:30 p.m. Then I gave
up, thinking the city lights were blocking them.
But, when I watched the news Wednesday morning, they had
many, many photos of them, from as close as Lapeer, and all of them taken after
10:00 p.m. Damn!
I have only seen them once in my life. I was 24 years old
and spending the night in a campsite next to a river in Richmond, Michigan. We
had been playing guitars in the tent and I went outside to take a break and
have a cigarette (I still smoked, back in those days). I stood there, near the
campfire and looked north. It was unbelievable. I called everybody else out and
we stood there, in awe.
I would have loved to see them again.
Some photos from last night:

I can't help but think of Windows Vista. No thanks.
