Stopped at Home Depot after work and spent another small fortune for the primer, the paint, painting supplies, spackling compound, etc. I also picked up 5 5-inch lag bolts and a 1/4 inch drill bit, six inches long. Mixing the paint took forever, and it wasn't until about 6:30 PM when I got home.
Jake was concerned that the deck screws I used to put in the 2 x 4 spacers and the new 2 x 6 joist were not sufficient for the load of the attic stairs and me, too. After he kept saying that, I started to worry about it as well. So, after getting home and unloading the car, I stuck the electrical extension cord up through the hole and climbed up the other ladder with my drill motor, the lag bolts and a ratchet and socket. I'd hoped to use the nut drivers I have to install the bolts, but the biggest one was a 7/16 inch and the lag bolts had 1/2 inch heads.
First thing I did when I got up in the attic was to open both windows. The heat was stifling! The next thing was to bang my head on the roof supports. Ouch!
So, I drilled through the new joist, through the 2 x 4 spacer and through the old joist, and then tightened each bolt by hand. I got done just before 8:00 PM.
For dinner I sliced up the grilled Italian sausages and added them to a jar of pasta sauce. Made some penne pasta and mixed the two together. Ate it watching TV and fell asleep just before 10:00 PM
