On this day in history...

Oct 3, 1226: St. Francis of Assisi, founder of the Franciscan order, died. I have always been fascinated by his journey from rich man's son to religious humanitarian and eventually to a saint. While He is portrayed these days as a friend to the birds and beasts (I have a statue of him in my garden, for example) he actually was the first reported person to have suffered the phenomenon of stigmata.
