Detroit Update

(I an glad my Mother is not able to use a computer and research this... She grew up in Detroit when it was a vibrant, promising city)

The fall of Detroit...

...some shocking facts:

1) Population decline from over 1,800,000 million to 900,000 (they think they still have over a millions voters though, lol)
2) First city in history of USA who's population dropped below 1,000,000.
3) Public school system with graduation rate lower than 25%
4) Public school system with one of the largest budgets, as well as largest deficits. (and probably the largest payroll)
5) Was once ranked #1 in nation with highest per capita income of any US city, to current ranking of 62nd in nation.
6) A Democratic mayor who was recently ignored, and not invited to be part of a rally in Detroit, by Barrack Obama, the current Democratic Party candidate for President. (Even Obama knows trash when he sees it)
7) Plus many more embarrassing statistics & facts currently being published nationwide.

Most of this is attributable to the corrupt, political bureaucracy that has existed over the last forty years, and is now worse than ever. What a shame!

  1. John, if this is "not a political blog," why do you initiate political discussions?

  2. You know, that's a very good point. My bad!

But, sometimes, I can't help it. It just makes me so mad! I remember going to my Mama Rene's house on Piper as a small kid and I thought it was beautiful. Now its just another slum!

And yes, there as some beautiful places still in Detroit, the Riverfront, Hart Plaza, the Detroit Cultural Center District (This area includes Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Historical Museum, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the Detroit Science Center, the Detroit Public Library and Wayne State University). But you go three blocks in any direction from them and it looks like a war-zone in Beruit!

    It's just a damn shame...
