Wednesday

So, it was Wednesday morning and back to work for my half day. It was cold outside, below freezing, but its supposed to be below freezing for the high for the next several days. Nothing like Alberta Canada, though. My friend sent me a screen shot of her weather: -33 degrees C. (or -22 degrees F.) for their high!

When I left work at 11:00 AM, I went to Meijer's. I got the few remaining items on my list and was back home by noon. Before changing clothes, I went outside and refilled the bird feeder.

Inside, I cleaned up from the chili-making and then started the dishwasher (it's time). Then I took a nice long nap.

I made a turkey sandwich for my dinner. I ate it along with some green olives (my favorite combination) and checked out the TV listings. I saw that TCM was having a Bogart festival tonight, so I watched the Maltese Falcon and Casablanca and then went to bed just after midnight (letting the next two tape).

  3. African Queen... that's the boat one? I wikied it (is that a verb now?) and while I don't remember starting it (or finishing it) I swear it was Bacall in the female role.

I checked out Bogart's entry and it appears that I'm probably thinking of a different film, as their image for this film is in colour and I remember it as black and white. However, of note is that Bogart was a founding member of the Rat Pack, as was Bacall. Bacall was quoted as saying the purpose of the Rat Pack was "to drink a lot of bourbon and stay up late".

Ahh, they don't make 'em like they used to. Sincere apologies to all the cats who didn't marry a dame as sweet as mine.

  4. Yes, the African Queen was a 30-foot steamboat in, well, Africa. But, not Lauren Bacall, it was Katherine Hepburn. She was 44 and Bogie was 55 at the time. It was a complete reversal of his usual character, as he was a drunken slob of a captain. But, both he and Hepburn got Oscar nominations for it and he won (I think that was his only Oscar, BTW).

Speaking of drinking a lot, almost the entire crew came down with dysentery while filming in Africa, including Hepburn and Bacall (who was there with Bogie) EXCEPT for Bogart and the director, John Huston. They credited drinking huge amounts of booze with keeping the bugs away!
