Soggy Saturday

I woke up late on Saturday, due to my conversation with my daughter, Melissa. However, I am not assigning blame. I thoroughly enjoyed our talk.

But, as I had a 10:00 AM barber appointment, I had to kick it into gear. I put on a four-cup pot of coffee and shaved. Then I hit the shower. I got dressed and left the house with just minutes to spare, after slamming down a cup of coffee. It was just sprinkling here at that time.

When my haircut and beard trim was done, I headed up Inkster, north for a mile, to the Value Center Market. By then it was really raining. But, I need two items for Canada Cathy's Christmas strata: Whole milk and Tabasco sauce.

Soaked to the skin, I made my way home. I treated the cats and then started on the strata (for my Sunday supper).

I began by cutting the crusts off of 16 slices of plain old white bread. Now, I don't have a 9" x 13" glass baking dish (which resulted in me trying to adapt the last strata dish and failing miserably) so I used a cake pan instead. I thoroughly buttered it. Then I set 8 pieces of the bread into it. Hmmm, maybe Canadian bread is shorter than ours, but I could only get 7 pieces (one cut in half) in the pan.

Then I got a bit confused. You're supposed to cover the bread with 16 slices of Canadian bacon (what else?) and then 16 slices of sharp cheddar cheese. But that seemed like a LOT of overlap. So I did two layers of eight each bacon and cheese. I hope I didn't screw this one up, too!

Then I topped it with the rest of the bread (to make it like a sandwich).

Next I six beat eggs and 1/2 teaspoon of pepper. To the egg mixture, I added 1/2 teaspoon of dry mustard, 1/4 cup of minced onion (I used a red onion, but her recipe wasn't specific), 1/4 cup of finely chopped green pepper, a teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce, three cups of milk and a dash of Tabasco. I poured that over the sandwiches, covered the pan with cling wrap and the snap-on lid and put it in the fridge to stand overnight.

I threw the bread crusts outside for the birds and squirrels and then took a one hour nap in the afternoon.

Later, I checked and there was like NOTHING on TV. I thought of going to my DVD's, but I'd watched them all a gazillion times, So, I watched "True Grit" once again.

When it was over, I performed the spring ritual on all my clocks. I sprung them all forward. The only place this is not just a push of one button is the old mantle clock in the living room and the two clocks in the bathroom.

I had planned a fantastic dinner for tonight, but at 9:00 PM, that seemed a bit much. So, I heated a can of chili, instead. Just be glad I don't call you on a smell-o-phone!

BTW, sometime today, my kitchen faucet started dripping, again. It's a very slow leak, so right now I am going to ignore it.

I watched TV until 10:30 PM and then I went to bed.
