Pondering while I washed some clothes

I was thinking the last time I did the wash about roles and responsibilities. I inadvertently left something in one of my pants pockets. I remembered it (belatedly), dug out the wet pants and retrieved it. Now, I'm on my own here so it's all up to me. But it did make me think...

In a multiple person home situation, whose responsibility is it to check for this stuff? The person who puts their clothes in the hamper or the person who puts the clothes in the washer?

I dunno...

  1. I think its the person who loads the washer.

  2. I disagree. I think its the person who puts the clothes in the hamper's responsibility.

  3. Not me. If I'm doing the laundry then it's the one who hampered it. If someone else is doing the laundry then it's the one who washes it.

  4. I'm with Sue. It's the person who puts the laundry in the hamper. You want to keep the stuff in your pockets then empty them out! If the washer finds anything then it's finder's keepers! Hey, it's the only way I make tips for housework around here, ha ha. Also, take a second and turn your socks and shirts right side out or you'll find them folded back in your drawer the same way you left them...

  5. Both. There is a control overlap to reduce the risk of washing unwashables.

  6. @jwg - I do see your point however, from a woman's perspective you see - we do it right the first time which eliminates the need for the quality control cross checking. Plus, it's redundant to check clothes twice - strictly in the interest of time management and efficiency of course...

  7. Uh oh! You never want to tell a disaster recovery lover that something is redundant.

  8. Well, I'm with Cathy. In this case it was money in my pocket, but the last time it was a pen in my shirt, which trashed my clothes. So, I think both checks are important!

  9. @Cathy - Having made a living on concepts of redundancy, my view is that duplicate effort to minimize fault is a good thing.

With a nod to CaptainK's carpentry background, measure twice and cut once. Or, check pockets twice and wash once. :)

@jwg - point taken and yes, duplicate effort to minimize fault can indeed be a good thing. In this case though, if the hamperer and the launderer are the same person then sure, check your own work again if you are not sure you did it right the first time. However, in my experience, if the hamperer and the launderer are 2 different people and the hamperer "knows" that the launderer is going to check anyways then, they get lazy and don't really worry about it at all. Did that make sense?

  11. @jwg - Don't let Cathy fool ya. Her husband works in IT too and knows all about redundancy and Disaster Planning. She just wants the change in the pockets, LOL!

  12. ha ha CK, you know me too well. I must admit though, it hasn't been very prosperous thus far. In 6 years I think my laundry room coin jar holds just a little over $4...

  13. oops, that last post was me. Darn! I didn't use duplicate effort to minimize fault. JWG wins the debate! :)
