Monday Moanin’

I had fallen asleep with my glasses on so, sure enough, when I woke up I had snapped the bow off. If you remember, these were my next oldest spare pair since my real glasses are lost.

So, I got out my third spare pair (about five or six years old) and could see well enough to get ready and drive to work (albeit a bit late). However, the prescription has changed just enough to give me a dull headache all day.

At lunchtime, I dropped my broken glasses off at my eye doctor’s. They said they might not be available (glass frames come and go) but if not, they’d get me something close. Then I swung by CVS and picked up this month’s prescription refills.

I had to go to Building 73 (one of my projects) so I dropped off that zucchini loaf to Jake. In fact, we exchanged food. He gave me a container of the black bean soup they’d made over the weekend.

I had to run another errand after work so I didn’t get home until almost 6:00 PM. I had two messages: one from my daughter Melissa and the other from the eye doctor (they still make that style of frames and they should be ready in about a week).

Melissa called back and we talked for a while. When we finally hung up, I warmed up that soup. It was thick and delicious.

I watched some TV but went to bed early (after carefully putting my glasses on the nightstand).

  1. @Jake
    so...what's in the soup?

  2. Seasoned a rump roast with adobo and then marinated it overnight with olive oil, sofrito and white vinegar. I seared it off the next morning and then braised it for ten hours with garlic, onions, serrano peppers, sofrito and beef stock. Separately, I simmered a pot of chicken stock with a ham hock, alcaparrado, sofrito, tomato sauce and black beans. When the roast was done, I shredded it, added it to stock pot with a bit of the braising liquid, removed the ham hock and let it reduce.

  3. LOL! Oh, one of those simple, hearty soups...

(All kidding aside, it was great!)

  4. What can I say? I'm fueled by the arduous.

  5. Sofrito is a processed (as in food processor) mixture of cilantro, garlic, onions, peppers and tomatoes. Alcaparrado comes in a jar and contains capers, olives and pimentos in a brine.

  6. Ah, I see. Well, thank God the cilantro is incorporated into the sofrito. I hate that crap!

  7. The zucchini bread was very good! It was a bit sweeter than say Mom used to make but works great with coffee in the morning. Similar to how you'd have a bit of course sugar on scones. Almost gone. In fact, it will be tomorrow.

  8. As I said, it was too sweet for me, but glad you liked it.
