A Hot Mustard Saga

Making my salami and Swiss cheese sandwich for lunch this morning, I was reminded of hot mustard. When I was young, I loved Red Pelican Hot Mustard. It was made in Detroit by a Belgian family and had just the right amount of heat for me. But, suddenly it disappeared from the grocery stores. At first I thought they had just run out, but I couldn't find it anywhere.

I tried Mister Mustard, but it was a poor equivalent and then it too disappeared. Now, I like (and have) various kinds of stone ground mustard, but they are not hot enough and tend to have a sweet note I don't appreciate.

So, I thought I'd Google Red Pelican Hot Mustard (hey, you can find anything on the internet, right?) and see where I could buy it from.

Well, I found out the company had been sold to Beatrice Foods years ago. However, I also found out that Dearborn Sausage had bought the original recipe and now markets it under the name Dearborn Sausage Hot Mustard.

It's supposed to be available at Kroger's, but I have a Dearborn Sausage outlet nearby me and plan on picking some up tomorrow. I'll let you know how the taste test goes.

Oh, and something called Koops Holland Extra Strong mustard is supposed to be an acceptable alternative (I never heard of that one).
