What is in your garden? Carl IV read about how the indians used to do a three sisters mound system Plant corn beans and squash the beans grow up around the stalk of the corn the squash acts as a ground covering thus not much wedding is needed. The neighbors laughed when he and Carl V were digging up the backyard to do this but I gotta admit other than looking odd, it is pretty cool.
Okay, from the left of the rear tomato trellis, I have two “Big Boy” tomatoes (courtesy of the neighbors) and one Roma (Italian) tomato. To the right I have three Roma tomatoes.
Next, I have four green pepper plants and then four hot pepper plants (also courtesy of the neighbors).
Next I have my sweet peas (on the trellis) which have never blossomed and I blame on the weather). Also in that row on the other side of the board are two broccoli plants and a Brussels spout (again, courtesy of the neighbors). In the front are three more broccoli plants.
I’d like to put four eggplants in front of the sweet peas, but haven’t found any yet.
In regards to the three sisters planting method, I agree. It was brilliant. I always laugh when reading old records of missionaries deriding the practice of planting a fish under them as an “offering to the profane gods.” It acted as fertilizer, you dumb sh*ts!
