Slowing Down on Sunday

I woke up at a ridiculously late 8:00 AM. But, because of my nap, I did go to bed late as well. I looked outside when I made my first cup of coffee and couldn’t see the back yard wall! I turned on the news and they were showing traffic cam shots of all the freeways and the fog was everywhere!

I felt like crap. My back still hurt, I had dried foam or glue or something on the back of one hand and cuts on the other. I just wanted to lay back down and go back to sleep or die. But, there are numerous items on the ToDo list yet unchecked, so I soldiered on. But, I did take it a little easier today than I did on Saturday.

I refilled my pill box and ate my morning pills. Then I refilled my coffee cup and rewound the mantle clock (weaving between the kitchen chairs I had put there last night).

Because it was so nice out yesterday, I had thawed out a steak, some brats and a pound of bacon (I need some of the bacon for Thanksgiving). So, I covered the half sheet pan with foil and cooked the bacon in the oven. When it cooled, (and after I had a few test pieces) I put the bacon in the fridge, But, I didn’t throw away the tinfoil or drain off the grease.

By 10:00 AM, the fog had lifted enough so I could see my wall, but not Inkster Road yet.

I screwed on the heat register after cleaning out some dried foam that had leaked into the duct.

B___ called and we caught each other up. He agreed with me about being nervous with Building inspectors in my home. The cats and I took another nap in the early afternoon. I could get used to this nap thing!

About 4:00 PM, I fired up some charcoal in the charcoal starter. Back inside, I took all my remaining redskin potatoes (that were beginning to sprout) and cut them into 1/4 inch slices. I should have used the mandolin, I suppose, but just did it with a chef’s knife. I laid them on the now hardened bacon grease and seasoned them with sea salt, fresh ground black pepper and a lot of finely chopped fresh rosemary. I stuck them in a preheated oven and let them bake while I grilled a pack of brats (for next week) and a nice T-bone steak.

When everything was ready, I ate an early (for me anyway) Sunday supper of steak and potatoes. Excellent!

I cleaned everything up and tackled the last project: Hanging up the herb drying rack I bought from Gardener’s.

Naturally, there wasn’t a joist where I wanted it (I checked with a finish nail) so I drilled a 5/8-inch hole in the ceiling and then used a threaded rod and toggle wings to install the swag hook I bought at Home Depot last week.

That accomplished, I put the rolling cart (which is where the round herb drying rack now hangs over) and the chairs back in the kitchen. I put away the tools and quit for the night.
