Thursday was another gloom, gray day with occasional showers.
It was noticeably cooler as well. Altogether unpleasant.
I took the front license plate into a sign shop to have it
lettered at lunch. It should be done in a day or two. From there, I went to
Annie’s, the restaurant that replaced the old Big Boy at Plymouth and Farmington.
It’s also now a bakery, so it smelled wonderful. It was pretty good food and reasonably
priced.
When I pulled in, I noticed the lilac was in bloom. It must
like rain. I walked over and picked a bloom for the house.
I went out back to dump the rain gauge. I had forgotten to
do it this morning. So, I can only tell you that, over the last two days, I got
about 3/4-inch of rain here.
While I was doing that, I noticed the chives were starting
to bud. That usually about the time they tend to get tough, so I thought I
better make my first harvest. I cut out as many as I could without cutting the
buds.
I took them inside and sat on the bed, snipping them into a
big bowl. Then I transferred them to a freezer bag, labeled them and stuck them
in the freezer. I threw last year’s bag in the trash.
I remembered to take my fish home, so I ate that for dinner
with some wild rice as the side. It was tasty, but nothing you could make food porn out of.
I watched a little TV but went to bed early. In spite of
several washings, my hand smelt like chives all night. But the bedroom air, with
its lilac scent, smelled like back home on the farm.
BTW, I was awakened at 2:00 a.m. by the smoke detector in my
room. She couldn’t wait until morning to tell me she had low batteries. I changed
them just to shut her up, but it took over an hour to fall back asleep!

I have never had a battery operated smoke detector alert that it was out of juice until the middle of the night. Mine have never spoken, like yours, so I play the "what was that?" "maybe it will stop" "damn it!" game until morning. Speaking of which, it's not like when I was young and we had one. I think we have one in every room. So I have to try and figure out which one is making the noise. Why can't they have a little LED indicator on them? When I'm asleep the damn thing beeps every second. When I'm awake and trying to figure out who needs changing, it's about ever hour. Grr.
ReplyDeleteI agree! Funny thing was that I decided it was the one in the office (you know how close the two are to each other and its hard to tell who's talking). So, I get the step stool, climb up, take it down and pull the batteries. Then the one in the bedroom said "Low battery!" Damn!
ReplyDeleteIf it makes you and Jake feel better, Mt. Clemens passed a new building code. You must have one in every room and level (except the kitchen) and they must be interlinked. If one goes off, they ALL do. Talk about an irritating noise.
ReplyDelete@ GPF: OH DEAR GOD! On the upside, if they have to be interlinked, they are probably hardwired into the house (avoiding the battery replacement).
ReplyDeleteBut, I can't picture that many women yelling at me...
